The Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education Kabale Campus needs 5.6 billion shillings to remove and replace asbestos roofing on staff and students’ hostels. The Campus Dean, Annet Komunda, told URN that NTC Kabale is scheduled to be officially handed over to UNITE on Thursday, June 18, 2026.

She says one of the key issues to be highlighted during the handover is the continued presence of asbestos roofing on staff and students’ hostels. She notes that campus management intends to use the occasion to demonstrate the challenges posed by the hazardous roofing material, which presents health risks to both staff and learners.

According to Komunda, management has repeatedly requested the removal of the asbestos roofs even before the institution was upgraded to UNITE, but the project has not yet been implemented.

She explains that the campus requires 5.6 shillings to safely remove and replace the asbestos roofs. She explained that the exercise requires specialised experts to prevent exposure to harmful fibres that can cause serious health complications, including cancer. The Academic Registrar, Gloria Akatukunda, says the UNITE Council should lobby for increased government sponsorship opportunities for students at the Kabale Campus.

Akatukunda also calls for approval to allow the campus to admit students pursuing a Bachelor of Education in Secondary Arts, particularly those intending to teach Geography and History. She wants the Council to advocate for accreditation of a Bachelor of Education in Agriculture programme, noting that the campus already has a fully established farm to support practical training.

UNITE Kabale Campus currently has an enrolment of 133 students in its first cohort. According to Komunda, the institution’s staffing level, including academic, administrative and support staff, stands at only 20 percent of the required workforce. She adds that since the campus is steadily growing, it requires additional staff and resources to accommodate increasing student numbers-URN.
