Fact Check: Was Hoima Stadium Rejected by CAF Ahead of AFCON 2027?
Social media has in recent days been awash with claims that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rejected Hoima City Stadium, one of Uganda’s flagship infrastructure projects ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The reports, which were widely shared across multiple social media platforms, sparked concern among football fans and stakeholders, with some users suggesting that Uganda’s preparations for the continental tournament had suffered a major setback.
However, government officials have moved swiftly to dismiss the claims.
State Minister for Sports Hon. Peter Ogwang described the reports as false and misleading, urging the public to disregard them. According to the minister, CAF has not rejected Hoima City Stadium and Uganda remains on course with its preparations for AFCON 2027.
“According to who? Ignore this crap.,” Ogwang said while responding to the circulating claims.

The confusion appears to stem from recommendations previously made by CAF during its inspection and assessment processes. Like many major stadium projects across the continent, Hoima City Stadium has undergone routine evaluations to ensure it meets the standards required to host matches at Africa’s premier football tournament.
CAF recently advised Uganda to implement several adjustments and improvements to certain aspects of the facility. However, these recommendations did not amount to a rejection of the stadium.
Sports authorities maintain that such feedback is a normal part of the inspection process and is intended to help host nations align their facilities with international requirements before final approval.
Hoima City Stadium remains one of the key venues being developed as Uganda prepares to co-host AFCON 2027 under the Pamoja Bid alongside Kenya and Tanzania. The tournament will mark the first time the East African region hosts Africa’s biggest football competition.
Since its groundbreaking, the stadium has attracted significant attention both locally and internationally due to its strategic importance in Uganda’s sports infrastructure development agenda. The project is expected to not only support AFCON 2027 but also boost sports tourism, investment, and economic activity in the Albertine region.
As preparations continue, officials have urged the public to rely on verified information from CAF and government agencies rather than unverified social media reports.
For now, there is no official communication from CAF indicating that Hoima City Stadium has been rejected.SEO Tags: Hoima City Stadium, CAF, AFCON 2027, Peter Ogwang, Uganda Sports, Pamoja Bid, Kenya Tanzania Uganda, African Cup of Nations, Hoima Stadium, Uganda Football News.
