UPDATE: Police Name Manafwa Friday Accident Victims
Police have named all the victims who were involved in Friday’s 19th June, 2026 accident along the Manafwa-Lwakhakha Road at Kufu Trading Centre Manafwa town council in Manafwa district.
The accident happened on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. when a taxi, registration number UA 169BX, travelling from Lwakhakha to Mbale Town lost control due to brake failure along the Lwakhakha-Manafwa Road.
According to Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, the deceased have been identified as Barbra Nelima, 38, a staff member (nurse) at Bugobero Health Centre IV and a resident of Manafwa District, and Rogers Walyawula Patrick, 72, a resident of Khabutola Sub-county in Manafwa district.
He added that four people who sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition are Samson Muyende, 54, a resident of Bugobero Sub-county in Manafwa district; Silvia Nangoka, 48, a nurse at Bugobero Health Centre IV; Rumushi Welishe, 70, a resident of Busumbu, Butiru Town Council in Manafwa District; and Teresa Mukimba, 38, a resident of Mayenze, Manafwa Town Council in Manafwa District.
“It is alleged that vehicle Reg. No. UA 169BX, a Toyota Hiace, was coming from the direction of Lwakhakha towards Manafwa. As it was descending at Kufu, it failed to break and ended up going off the road and overturning. Two passengers died and several were injured,” Taitika said.
He confirmed that the vehicle had been parked at Manafwa Central Police Station as they hunted for the driver who fled. The cause of the accident is the poor mechanical condition of the vehicle.
