Grief has engulfed Bunyangabu County Member of Parliament Dr. Victor Kalenzi following the death of his four-year-old son, Psalms Kalenzi Victor Amooti, after a battle with cancer.

Psalms passed away on June 17, 2026, at Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment. His death has drawn an outpouring of sympathy from political leaders, religious figures, friends and residents across the Tooro sub-region.

Hundreds of mourners gathered on Saturday at Bulinda Village in Kagera Parish, Rubona Town Council, Bunyangabu District, to pay their final respects during a funeral service attended by senior government officials, legislators, clergy and community members.

Among the dignitaries present was Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, who led mourners in comforting the bereaved family and praised Dr. Kalenzi for his service to the people of Bunyangabu.

Speaking during the burial ceremony, Tayebwa urged the family to remain strong during the difficult period and commended the solidarity shown by residents and leaders who came together to support them.

The Deputy Speaker also used the occasion to announce a Shs300 million contribution towards the construction of a pediatric ward at Kibiito Health Centre IV, a project championed by Dr. Kalenzi.

“You voted a very strong Member of Parliament in Hon. Victor Kalenzi. I will add Shs300 million towards the Kibiito Health Centre IV pediatric ward project,” Tayebwa told mourners.

During an emotional thanksgiving address at St. Paul’s Church of Uganda in Rubona, Dr. Kalenzi thanked relatives, friends, religious leaders and residents who stood with his family throughout his son’s illness.

Fighting back tears, the legislator described Psalms as a child whose life, though short, was filled with promise.

“Psalms had vision and purpose, but God loved him more and chose to take him home,” he said.

Dr. Kalenzi also used the moment to raise concerns about the growing burden of cancer in Uganda, calling for improved healthcare services and greater accountability in the management of public resources intended for the health sector.

His wife, Mrs. Philomena Kalenzi, remembered their son as a loving and deeply prayerful child whose faith inspired those around him.

“Psalms was a prayer warrior. He was always asking us to pray,” she said.

The Bishop of Rwenzori Diocese, Rt. Rev. Reuben Kisembo, who led prayers during the mourning period, encouraged the family and mourners to remain steadfast in faith despite the pain of loss.

Throughout the funeral service, speakers remembered Psalms as a cheerful, innocent and courageous child whose life touched many people beyond his immediate family.

As hymns were sung and prayers offered, emotional scenes unfolded at the graveside as mourners bid farewell to the young boy before he was laid to rest at his family’s ancestral home in Bulinda Village.

Though he lived for only four years, many described Psalms Kalenzi Victor Amooti as a child whose faith, resilience and warm spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

His passing leaves a profound void in the Kalenzi family and among the people of Bunyangabu, who had joined in prayers and hope for his recovery throughout his illness.
