An armed robber was on Tuesday morning shot dead as police foiled a robbery at Ssemwogerere Zone, Nakawa Division in Kampala City.
The midnight incident involved officers who were conducting a patrol in the area when three armed men attacked a businessman and his wife who were walking along Mukasa Road and ordered them to lie down.
Police say the robbers successfully robbed the man of his mobile phone and wallet at gunpoint, before turning to the woman when police officers on motorcycle patrol coincidentally arrived at the scene.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Rachel Kawala said the timely intervention disrupted the robbery and forced the suspects to flee.
“Our patrol officers who were conducting routine motorcycle patrols in the area arrived at the scene just as the robbery was ongoing. Upon noticing the police, the suspects attempted to flee,” said SP Kawala.
During the pursuit, the suspects abandoned a bag containing suspected stolen items and a firearm.
One unidentified male suspect, estimated to be about 25 years old, was fatally injured during the operation.
Police recovered several exhibits from the scene, including a SAR rifle, a bayonet, four smartphones suspected to be stolen, two black shaving machines, three black jackets, one empty cartridge, a screwdriver, a pair of red canvas shoes, and a black laptop bag.
The body of the deceased suspect was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for post-mortem examination.
