I don’t need hit songs anymore – Cindy Sanyu
Singer says she’s focused on quality music, loyal fans and taking Ugandan music global
Veteran songstress Cindy Sanyu has made it clear that she’s no longer under pressure to release a chart-dominating hit every year just to prove her relevance.
Speaking during a recent interview, the outspoken singer revealed that she has reached a point in her musical journey where creating timeless music is more important than chasing commercial success.
According to Cindy, many people wrongly believe that Ugandan artists must constantly produce blockbuster hits to survive in the industry. She, however, says her mission is simply to keep delivering quality music that naturally connects with listeners.
“I don’t need a hit song, but I need to float. I can’t sink. I need good music, the kind that doesn’t necessarily need too much promotion but can still catch people,” Cindy said.
The former Blu*3 star explained that her biggest responsibility is to the loyal fans who have supported her throughout her career. Rather than reinventing herself to fit every new trend, she wants to reward that support with meaningful songs they can continue enjoying.
“I have this fanbase that has been there since my establishment, so I need to give them something as we keep walking together,” she added.
Cindy also dismissed claims that her music only appeals to local audiences, arguing that international success is not determined by talent alone. She believes government support and investment in the creative industry are key ingredients for artists hoping to break onto the global stage.
Using TZ Diamond Platnumz as an example, Cindy said his rise to international fame was backed by strong institutional support, something she believes Ugandan musicians have lacked for years.
“Our government doesn’t care at the moment, and I’m happy now they are beginning to care. We need a budget to get airplay for Ugandan artists,” she noted.
For years, Cindy has remained one of the loudest voices advocating for greater investment in Uganda’s entertainment industry. She maintains that with proper funding, promotion and strategic support, Ugandan artists can compete on the international stage just as successfully as their East African counterparts.
Whether or not she delivers another chart-topping anthem, one thing is certain: Cindy Sanyu believes her legacy will be built on consistency, quality and staying true to the fans who have stood by her from the very beginning
