Kampala-President Yoweri Museveni has reportedly authorized former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among (AAA) to travel to India for specialized medical treatment after concerns emerged about her deteriorating health condition, TheSpy Uganda exclusively reports.

Highly placed sources told our Spy via WhatsApp chat on Sunday afternoon that the President has relaxed restrictions that had allegedly limited Among’s movements, paving the way for her to seek urgent medical attention abroad. Sources indicate that Among is battling a serious health condition, including a suspected blood clot in one of her legs, necessitating advanced treatment outside the country.

According to information obtained by this publication, Museveni directed current Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth-Oboth to ensure that all logistical arrangements for Among’s travel are coordinated and facilitated.

Sources revealed that the President instructed parliamentary authorities to meet the costs associated with the trip, including travel expenses, accommodation, medical bills and other related requirements necessary for her treatment.

“Make sure Parliament meets her expenses and ensure she gets all the necessary support needed,” a source familiar with the directive on condition of anonymity quoted the President as saying.

Following the reported directive, parliamentary officials are said to have immediately commenced discussions on implementing the arrangements.

However, neither State House nor Parliament had officially commented on the matter by press time.

From Political Underdog To One Of Museveni’s Most Trusted Allies

Among’s political journey remains one of the most remarkable transformations in Uganda’s contemporary political landscape.

Before becoming one of the most influential figures within the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Among was associated with opposition politics and was a strong cadre of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), a party that for years positioned itself as the principal challenger to President Museveni’s government.

Her political fortunes dramatically changed after aligning herself with the ruling establishment, where she steadily climbed the ranks and cultivated a close working relationship with the country’s top leadership.

Among’s rise accelerated when she was elected Deputy Speaker of Parliament in 2021, serving under the late Speaker Jacob Oulanyah. During Oulanyah’s prolonged illness and eventual passing in March 2022, Among became a central figure in parliamentary operations, often presiding over legislative business more times than her deputy Thomas Tayebwa.

Following Oulanyah’s death, she successfully contested for the position of Speaker, defeating her competitors and assuming leadership of one of the country’s most powerful institutions.

For a period, she was widely viewed as one of the most influential political figures in the country, enjoying significant backing from sections of the NRM establishment and commanding substantial authority within Parliament.

Corruption Storms That Defined Her Speakership

Yet her tenure would later become overshadowed by some of the most damaging corruption allegations ever directed at Parliament. Public outrage intensified following reports of questionable expenditures, controversial service awards, and allegations of abuse of public resources.

The controversy reached international dimensions when anti-corruption activists and civil society groups amplified calls for accountability through digital campaigns and public awareness initiatives.

One of the most notable campaigns emerged through online activism that sought to expose what campaigners described as extravagant spending and institutionalized corruption within Parliament.

The campaign gained traction across social media platforms, drawing attention from both local and international audiences and putting Among’s leadership under unprecedented scrutiny.

As pressure mounted, critics accused parliamentary leadership of failing to uphold transparency and accountability standards expected of public institutions.

The AGORA Campaign And International Spotlight

Particularly damaging was the sustained activism spearheaded by the anti-corruption platform AGORA, which organized online exhibitions and advocacy campaigns highlighting allegations of financial impropriety within Parliament.

The initiative attracted widespread attention and intensified demands for investigations into the management of public funds.

Supporters of the campaign argued that Parliament had become a symbol of excessive public expenditure at a time when many Ugandans were grappling with economic hardships.

The campaign’s visibility generated significant discomfort among political elites and transformed the corruption debate into a major national issue.

The heightened activism also triggered confrontations between authorities and anti-corruption campaigners.

Several activists associated with anti-corruption demonstrations and online mobilization efforts were arrested at different times as security agencies moved to contain protests and public actions targeting parliamentary leadership.

Critics interpreted the arrests as attempts to suppress dissent and shield powerful officials from accountability, while authorities maintained that law enforcement actions were undertaken in accordance with public order and security considerations.

These developments further polarized public opinion regarding Among’s leadership.

Searches, Seizures And Investigations

More recently, Among’s political troubles deepened following intensified investigations into alleged corruption and abuse of office.

Reports emerged of security agencies conducting searches in her various homes in connection to abnormal amass of wealth, corruption, money laundering among others.

While official details remain limited, the investigations have significantly altered the political landscape surrounding the former Speaker, whose influence had for years appeared virtually unassailable.

It is important to note that allegations against Among remain subject to ongoing investigations, and she has consistently denied wrongdoing.

A Polarizing Legacy

Despite the controversies, Among retains a substantial support base, particularly in her home region and among beneficiaries of her philanthropy and community outreach initiatives.

Supporters frequently describe her as generous, approachable and willing to directly assist ordinary citizens in ways many political leaders do not.

Even some critics acknowledge that she cultivated a reputation for sharing resources with communities, supporting religious institutions, youth groups and vulnerable populations.

For these supporters, Among represents a leader who remained connected to grassroots constituencies despite occupying one of the highest offices in the land.

Her detractors, however, argue that charitable giving can never substitute for accountability in the management of public resources and insist that all corruption allegations must be thoroughly investigated regardless of political status.

As she reportedly prepares for medical treatment in India, Anita Among finds herself at the center of a political paradox: admired by loyal supporters as a generous servant leader, yet fiercely criticized by opponents who view her tenure as emblematic of the excesses that have long plagued Uganda’s public institutions.

Whether her latest health challenges temporarily pause the political turbulence surrounding her remains to be seen, but few would dispute that Anita Among’s journey—from opposition circles, to the pinnacle of parliamentary power, and ultimately into the eye of corruption investigations—has become one of the most consequential political stories of modern Uganda
