KAMPALA — Prosecutors have completed preparations to prosecute former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, with sources familiar with the investigations saying the case file is now complete and awaiting the final steps before charges are formally brought.

“The file is ready,” a source close to the investigations told ChimpReports.

“It is now a matter of time, not if,” the source added, suggesting investigators and prosecutors have substantially concluded their work.

The development marks a significant escalation in one of Uganda’s highest-profile corruption investigations in recent years, one that has already upended Among’s political career and engulfed Parliament’s top administrative structures.

Over the past several weeks, investigators from the Inspectorate of Government and the Criminal Investigations Directorate have searched properties linked to Among in Nakasero, Kigo and Bukedea, seized documents and electronic devices and impounded luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce and a Range Rover.

The investigations have centred on allegations relating to corruption, wealth declaration and the management of parliamentary resources.

The probe has also widened to include Parliament’s bureaucracy.

Seven senior Parliament officials — Chris Ariko Obore, Daniel Adilo, Leonard Okema, Rajab Kaaya Ssemalulu, Emmanuel Emuron Okwi, Vincent Otebata and Methods Murebe — have already been charged before the Anti-Corruption Court with embezzlement, causing financial loss and money laundering involving billions of shillings allegedly diverted from Parliament between 2023 and 2026.

The prosecution of officials who served during Among’s tenure as Speaker has intensified speculation that investigators are now piecing together the broader chain of decision-making and financial management within Parliament.

Among has consistently denied wrongdoing.

Speaking recently to a delegation of Teso elders at her Nakasero residence, she insisted that many of the allegations made against her had not been substantiated.

“I was accused of many things, including having sacks of money, which was not true at all,” she said.

“All the things I was accused of were not found during the investigations.”

She has also maintained that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni treated her fairly during the process and has repeatedly pledged loyalty to the ruling National Resistance Movement.

The former Speaker withdrew from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament amid the investigations and was replaced by Jacob Oboth Oboth.

Sources say the completion of the prosecution file now leaves Among awaiting a decision on when charges will be formally preferred against her.

For the former Speaker, once regarded as one of the most powerful figures in Ugandan politics, the coming days could prove decisive as investigators move from evidence gathering to the prosecution stage in a case that has already reshaped Parliament’s political landscape
