A confrontation at a trading centre in Rukungiri District ended in the deaths of two people on Tuesday night after a 25-year-old man was lynched by an angry mob moments after he allegedly stabbed a 19-year-old man to death. Police identified the deceased as Justus Akandwanaho, 25, a resident of Nyakasharara Village, Rubanga South Parish, Buyanja Sub-county, and Emmanuel Karubakanga, 19.

According to preliminary police findings, the two had spent Tuesday evening at Nyakasharara Trading Centre with other residents during a social gathering when a quarrel broke out between them. Police say Akandwanaho allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Karubakanga in the chest, killing him on the spot.

The incident reportedly enraged people at the trading centre, who turned on Akandwanaho and beat him to death before police could intervene. Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime confirmed the incident and said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths are ongoing.

Tumushime condemned the mob killing, reminding members of the public that taking the law into their own hands is a criminal offence. He urged residents to hand suspects over to the police, saying it is the responsibility of the justice system to investigate alleged offences and prosecute those found culpable.
