Works and Transport Minister Katumba Byamukama has ordered a nationwide safety audit of railway crossings and high‑risk roads following two deadly crashes that have shaken the country.
The directive comes after a Bobi road accident along the Kampala–Gulu Highway claimed 14 lives, and a separate collision between a school bus and a train in Mukono killed one person and injured several others.
In a statement, the minister said he was deeply saddened by the Mukono crash, which occurred yesterday morning, just days after the Bobi tragedy. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Byamukama blamed reckless driving, speeding, and disregard for traffic rules for many of the country’s road deaths, insisting that dangerous driving must attract firm consequences to deter risky behaviour.
The minister has directed his ministry to work with @RailwaysUganda, @PoliceUg, and other agencies to carry out a comprehensive safety audit, review school transport standards, strengthen enforcement, and improve signage and warning systems at railway crossings and known blackspots.
He also called for intensified road safety awareness campaigns, arguing that the latest crashes are a stark reminder that urgent, coordinated action is needed to protect lives on Uganda’s roads and rail crossings.
