Hailstorms and heavy rains have destroyed crops and property in Nyaruhanga Cell, Katete Sub-county, Kanungu District.
The rain, accompanied by heavy winds and hailstorms, started on Sunday at around 2:00 p.m., destroying crops and property, leaving many residents devastated and counting their losses.
Speaking to our reporter, Patrick Katushabe, a resident of the same village, revealed that the hailstorms destroyed crops such as cassava, banana plantations, and coffee.
Moreover, Katushabe said the hailstorms also killed some animals and appealed to the government to intervene and provide support, citing that children are starving and parents have lost their income.
Another resident, Grace Mutabazi, informed our reporter that the hailstorms lasted for more than two hours, destroying houses and crops and killing animals. She added that this is not the first time they have been affected by the hailstorms, but their leaders have turned a deaf ear.
Moreover, she appealed for government aid, highlighting that some residents had borrowed loans expecting to repay them with proceeds from the crops, which have now been destroyed by the hailstorms.
In response, Hon. Partson Owokushaba, commonly known as Embarasi, the district councillor for Katete Sub-county, acknowledged the matter and urged the affected residents to register with their LC1 chairperson.
Meanwhile, Owokushaba pledged to compile a report on the damage and submit it to the District Production Office, which will later forward it to the Office of the Prime Minister through the Chief Administrative Officer. He noted that Kanungu District does not have an Office of Relief and Disaster Preparedness.
