Tororo District Woman MP, Akoth Angela, has pledged to work hand-in-hand with local leaders and stakeholders to address the mounting challenges crippling business at Tororo Central Market.

The commitment came on Monday 27th July, 2026 after the legislator held separate consultative meetings with market leaders and hundreds of frustrated vendors who laid bare the daily struggles inside the multi-million shilling facility.

During the engagements, vendors raised a litany of grievances ranging from accumulated rental arrears, lack of cold rooms for perishable goods, to poor access to stalls on the first and second floors due to the market’s design.

They also decried high electricity bills, alleging that a private company imposes extra levies on top of UEDCL charges, making power unaffordable. Traders further appealed for designated and accessible spaces for night markets.

Beyond infrastructure, vendors expressed dissatisfaction with how decisions affecting the market are made, accusing both district and municipal leaders of acting without consultation.

Akoth described markets as central to household incomes and local economic growth.

“Markets are central to driving the local economy and improving household incomes,” she said.

The legislator said she will immediately engage the Mayor and other municipal leaders to identify practical and sustainable solutions.

“Some challenges can be resolved immediately, others will require broader consultations,” Akoth noted. “But we are not here for politics. We are here to deliver.” She added.

On the Parish Development Model, she explained that creating a separate parish for the market to qualify for PDM funding may not be feasible. However, she insisted vendors must not be left out.

“Eligible traders should access PDM support through their respective parishes and sub-counties,” she said. “We also need increased sensitisation on government programmes and their eligibility requirements.” Akoth added.

She further revealed plans to lobby for special grants tailored for market traders to ensure Tororo vendors benefit from national government initiatives.

After meeting market leaders, the MP walked through the stalls to interact directly with vendors and gather more views.

She reaffirmed her commitment to service delivery, ending her address with a rallying call.

“This is Kisanja – no sleep. We are ready to work for our people. We want to see change in the lives of our people, and it begins now,” Akoth said.
