Kabale Gets Shs 600 Million Maternity Ward in Bill Tibeingana’s Tribute to Late Mother.

Kabale District Engineer Januario Bagamuhunda said the new facility has been designed to Health Centre III standards. The 33-metre by 19-metre building will house a maternity ward, labour ward, children's ward, male ward, placenta pit, medical waste pit and a four-stance VIP latrine.

Kabale District leaders have launched the construction of Shs 600 million maternity ward at Nyabushabi Health Centre II in Kyanamira Sub-county, a project expected to significantly improve maternal and child healthcare services in the area.

The maternity ward is being fully funded by businessman Bill Tibeingana and his family in memory of his late mother, Jovia Kesiime Kyoribona. The Diocese of Kigezi donated the land for the project.

Representing the Bishop of Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, the Archdeacon of All Saints Church, Ven. Canon Emmanuel Namanya Bwagyi, said the Diocese offered the land after recognizing the urgent need for improved maternal healthcare services in Nyabushabi.

He explained that the decision was approved through the parish, archdeaconry and diocesan council structures, demonstrating the Church’s commitment to complementing government efforts in providing healthcare, education and other social services.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, donor Bill Tibeingana said the project is both a tribute to his late mother and a way of giving back to the community that raised him.

He noted that expectant mothers currently travel about eight kilometres to access maternity services at Kyanamira Health Centre III because Nyabushabi Health Centre II operates with only one room serving as both a maternity and labour ward despite conducting more than 15 deliveries every month.

Kabale District Chairperson Denis Ndyomugyenyi Nzeirwe described the donation as a major investment in healthcare, saying the new maternity ward will help reduce maternal and infant deaths caused by inadequate maternity facilities and the long distances mothers travel to access skilled delivery services.

Resident District Commissioner Maj. Godfrey Katamba, who presided over the function, praised Tibeingana for investing in the welfare of his community, describing the project as a lasting legacy that will benefit generations.

“A person’s true legacy is not the wealth they leave behind, but the positive impact they make in the lives of others,” Katamba said, urging other Ugandans to emulate such acts of generosity.

Chief Administrative Officer Robert Mugabe described Tibeingana and his family as role models and called on parents to instil values of compassion and service in their children to nurture future generations committed to community development.

Kabale Assistant District Health Officer in charge of Maternal and Child Health, Paddy Mwesigye, said the Health Department strongly supported the project because of the overwhelming demand for improved maternity services at Nyabushabi.

He explained that the health facility, which was established through community efforts, currently operates from a single building and handles about four deliveries every week under constrained conditions.
