Brig Gen. Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru has been promoted to the rank of Major General

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has appointed Brig. Gen. Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru as the acting commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC), promoting him to the acting rank of major general with immediate effect.

The appointment, announced on Monday by Acting Director of Defence Public Information Col. Chris Magezi, sees Nyakikuru take charge of one of Uganda’s most powerful military formations, which is responsible for presidential security, protection of key national installations and special operations.

“The Chief of Defence Forces UPDF and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations (SPA/SO), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has appointed Brig Gen Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru the acting Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC). Brig Gen Nyakikuru is also granted the acting rank of Major General. The appointment and promotion take immediate effect,” Magezi said.

Nyakikuru replaces Maj. Gen. David Mugisha, who will spend the next few months preparing to attend a National Defence College (NDC) course abroad.

ChimpReports understands Mugisha will be headed to a South East Asian country for his military course.

Magezi praised the outgoing commander for his service, saying: “The UPDF thanks Major General David Mugisha for the outstanding tour of duty as commander SFC and wish him good luck in his strategic security studies. We also congratulate Acting Major General Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru on his deserved appointment and promotion. We also wish him good luck in his new duties.”

The reshuffle comes less than a week after Gen. Muhoozi promoted more than 300 UPDF officers, continuing a broad reorganisation of the force’s senior leadership as the military prepares for new command assignments and professional military education programmes.

Nyakikuru previously served as commander of the commando formation in the Special Forces Group.

He also commanded specialised military operations in DRC, Somalia and Northern Uganda.
