KCCA Begins 16-Month Rehabilitation of Yusuf Lule, Old Kireka, Bombo II Roads

Kampala Capital City Authority has launched another phase of road rehabilitation under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme, with motorists warned to expect traffic disruptions over the next 16 months.

KAMPALA — The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has commenced another phase of road rehabilitation under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP), with construction expected to last 16 months.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, KCCA said the project is part of ongoing efforts to improve the city's road infrastructure, enhance mobility and support Kampala's growing transport demands.

The latest phase of works will cover Old Kireka Road, Lance Road, Kireka Link, Bombo Road II (Wandegeya–Bwaise), Yusuf Lule Road, Gaddafi Road and Bukoto Street.

Once completed, the authority said, the upgraded roads are expected to improve connectivity, ease the movement of people and goods, and enhance the overall efficiency of Kampala's transport network.

KCCA, however, warned that the construction works will cause temporary traffic disruptions along the affected corridors and urged road users to plan their journeys accordingly.

"Road users should expect traffic interruptions and longer travel times. To ease disruption, plan your journey ahead of time, use alternative routes, follow traffic management plans and Traffic Police and Marshals to maintain flow. Diversion signage will be installed for guidance," the authority said.

To minimise disruption, KCCA said clearly marked diversion routes will be established, while Traffic Police officers and road marshals will be deployed to manage vehicle movement and reduce congestion throughout the construction period.

The authority appealed to motorists, pedestrians and other road users to cooperate with traffic officers, observe diversion signs and comply with all traffic management measures to ensure safety around the construction zones.

The rehabilitation works form part of the broader Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme, which aims to modernise transport infrastructure and improve connectivity across the Kampala metropolitan area.

In recent years, the programme has supported the construction and rehabilitation of several roads across the capital to reduce traffic congestion, improve drainage and increase accessibility.

"We appreciate your patience as we work to deliver a safer, more efficient road network for the City," KCCA said.
