MTN Uganda and Afro Mobile have launched Entertainment TV, a digital platform aimed at expanding access to local and international entertainment while providing new opportunities for Ugandan content creators.
MTN Uganda, in partnership with AfroMobile, has launched Entertainment TV, a new digital entertainment platform aimed at expanding access to local and international content while creating opportunities for Ugandan content creators.
The platform, branded MTN by AfroMobile, seeks to respond to the growing demand for accessible digital entertainment by offering users a wide range of content, including sports, movies and music.
Speaking at the launch, MTN Uganda Chief Executive Sylvia Mulinge said the platform was created to meet changing consumer needs in the digital era.
“We launched Entertainment TV to bring people the content they want in a place where they can easily access it. People want to watch football, catch up on movies and listen to music. When we put the internet in the hands of a customer, there must be a compelling reason for them to click on their browser,” Mulinge said.
She said content has become a major driver of the digital economy, going beyond entertainment to create economic opportunities for creators.
“Content is not just a matter of participation; it is about creating a global economy. We are saying content is a demographic and economic driver. Through innovation, we want to create opportunities for content creators by providing a pathway through which their work can be created, discovered and drive engagement with audiences,” she said.
AfroMobile Chief Executive Kevin Kaija described the partnership with MTN Uganda as a strategic collaboration that would unlock opportunities for Uganda’s creative sector.
Kaija said the platform would enable Ugandan creators to showcase, monetise and distribute their work to audiences both locally and internationally, helping them participate in the global digital economy.
Ugandan film producer Eleanor Nabwiso welcomed the initiative, saying it addresses two of the biggest challenges facing filmmakers and content creators — funding and distribution.
“This platform will help solve the long-standing problems of funding and distribution that many filmmakers and content creators have faced for years,” Nabwiso said.
Representing the Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Fred Otunu said Uganda’s digital content sector is undergoing significant transformation, creating new possibilities for creators and the wider creative industry.
“The Commission welcomes digital growth that provides new avenues for Ugandan content creators to reach wider audiences,” Otunu said.
However, Otunu urged digital platforms to prioritise reliability, quality service and compliance with regulatory requirements to maintain public confidence.
“Trust is what will sustain the growth of this infrastructure. Providers must uphold high standards of consumer protection and comply with the set standards to ensure the continued growth of the digital ecosystem,” he said.
The launch of Entertainment TV is expected to strengthen Uganda’s digital entertainment ecosystem by connecting audiences to diverse content while creating new commercial opportunities for local creatives and positioning Ugandan creators to compete in the global digital marketplace.
