Adjumani: Awindiri Market Traders Dump Garbage on Road Over Delayed Collection

The waste pile-up has blocked access to part of the busy Adjumani market, exposing traders and customers to worsening sanitation concerns as authorities struggle to restore collection services.

Traders at Awindiri Market in Adjumani Town have dumped garbage on a road leading into the busy market after the designated collection point filled up and town authorities failed to remove the waste despite repeated pleas.

The traders say the garbage had accumulated for days at the designated collection point, forcing them to dispose of it on the road and partially block access to the market.

Pious Eruaga, the chairperson of Awindiri Market vendors, said he raised the issue with town authorities a week ago but was told that the garbage collection truck had broken down.

“The traders pay market dues and they expect a clean environment. So now the collection point is full, they have decided to dump the garbage on the road,” Eruaga said.

Eruaga appealed to the traders to ensure that waste is properly managed and regularly collected to prevent further accumulation and protect sanitation at the market.

Adjumani Town Clerk Patrick Eriku Keleture, when contacted at his office, said he was rushing to a meeting at the district to discuss the matter and would address the press later.

Adjumani Town Council LC III Chairperson Lawrence Mangapi also said a meeting was being held to find a solution to the problem and promised to brief the press after 30 minutes.

The standoff has renewed concerns about waste management at one of Adjumani Town's busiest markets, where the accumulation of garbage has not only created a sanitation concern but also disrupted access.

The incident has also exposed the town council's vulnerability when its main garbage collection vehicle breaks down, leaving traders with limited options for disposing of waste.

Residents have urged the authorities to prioritise garbage management and consider investing in more reliable waste collection equipment to reduce disruptions caused by frequent vehicle breakdowns.
