Grace Nakimera questions UPRS over UGX 1 million royalty payment

Grace Nakimera has revealed that she received only UGX 1 million from the Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS), questioning how royalties have been distributed to musicians over the years.

Nakimera joins a growing list of Ugandan musicians who have publicly acknowledged receiving payments from UPRS, but she says the amount she received left her with more questions about the system and how artists’ royalties are calculated.

They gave me Shs 1 million and I ate it. I asked myself, is the money from 2004 to now, 20 years, making only UGX 1 million? Meaning they have paid me UGX 1,000 for every song or Shs 400 for all those years.

Nakimera believes there is a need for greater accountability and an inquiry into how the money collected on behalf of musicians is distributed.

According to her, the figures do not make sense considering the length of time she has been releasing music and the number of songs in her catalogue.

Nakimera also revealed that the payment was sent directly to her phone, and although she immediately used the money, she later questioned the amount she had received.

I ate the money right away and complained after. They send the money on your phone but I used it immediately.
