JUST IN: Habib Buwembo Storms Kampala High Court, Demands Refund of His UGX 3M Bail

Renowned activist Habib Buwembo caused a stir at Kampala High Court as he demanded a refund of UGX 3 million, which he paid as bail in a defamation case against Speaker Anita Among. Habib Buwembo, arrested in 2022 over allegations of defaming the Speaker, was later acquitted when the case was dismissed.

However, he claims that despite multiple follow-ups, the court has yet to refund his bail money. Speaking to journalists outside the court premises, Habib Buwembo expressed frustration at the system's inefficiencies.

“It is not just about the money but also about the principle. Why is the judiciary holding onto funds that belong to the people, especially after cases are resolved in their favor?” he questioned.

The defamation case stemmed from statements Buwembo allegedly made in 2022, accusing the Speaker of misconduct. These allegations led to his arrest and temporary imprisonment until he secured his release on bail.

Although the charges were dropped, the delay in refunding his money has focused attention on bigger concerns about transparency in Uganda’s judicial system.

Legal experts have pointed out that bail refunds are often delayed due to bureaucratic red tape. Activists, however, argue that such delays discourage citizens from trusting the judiciary.

Habib Buwembo’s actions come amid growing calls for judicial reforms to ensure efficiency and fairness in handling public resources. Whether the court will expedite his refund remains to be seen, but his protest has reignited debate over the administration of justice in Uganda.
