President Museveni Requests Tanzanian Judge to Lead Justice Kisaakye's Investigation
A Tanzanian judge has been appointed to lead an investigation into allegations of misconduct against Uganda’s Supreme Court Justice Esther Kitimbo Kisaakye. This decision follows a request from Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to his Tanzanian counterpart, President Samia Suluhu Hassan, to ensure the investigation is fair and impartial.
The issues surrounding Justice Kisaakye began in March 2021 when she wrote a dissenting opinion in a case involving opposition candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine. He challenged President Museveni’s election victory. After this ruling, Justice Kisaakye claimed that Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo and other senior officials in the judiciary were targeting her unfairly.
- Judicial Service Commission's Recommendation: Earlier this year, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) suggested that President Museveni suspend Justice Kisaakye and investigate her for alleged misconduct.
- Presidential Response: President Museveni turned down Justice Kisaakye’s request for early retirement, stating that it would interfere with the ongoing investigation.
- Legal Action by Justice Kisaakye: In response to her treatment, Justice Kisaakye has filed a lawsuit against the Chief Justice and other high-ranking judicial officers, claiming she has been treated unfairly.
The appointment of a Tanzanian judge to oversee this investigation is an important step towards ensuring that the allegations against Justice Kisaakye are examined fairly. This move aims to maintain the integrity of Uganda’s judicial system during a time of controversy.
As the investigation proceeds, it could have significant consequences for both Justice Kisaakye’s future and the overall reputation of Uganda’s judiciary. Many people will be watching closely to see how this situation develops and what impact it may have on similar cases in the future.
