Canary Mugume: Museveni Breaks His Own Rules in Kenya – No Mask, Handshakes, and Watching Football
Ugandan journalist Canary Mugume has stirred up discussion about President Yoweri Museveni’s surprising behaviour during his recent visit to Kenya. In a post on social media platform X, Mugume pointed out that Museveni seemed to relax some of the strict health rules he usually follows in Uganda, such as wearing masks, avoiding handshakes, and even attending a lively football match.
This behaviour caught many people off guard, especially since Museveni has been a strong supporter of COVID-19 safety measures in Uganda. Even though the country has achieved widespread vaccination and the virus is no longer a major threat, the president had continued to wear masks and keep his distance from others in public. Mugume’s comments highlight the clear difference between Museveni's actions at home and abroad.
During his trip to Kenya, Museveni attended the opening of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya County. There, he watched an exciting football match where Kitara played against Gor Mahia. This event showed a more relaxed side of the president, offering a different atmosphere than what Ugandans are used to seeing.
The friendly nature of Kenyan President William Ruto likely influenced Museveni’s change in behaviour. Ruto's warm approach seems to have encouraged Museveni to step outside his usual reserved manner.
While it is unclear whether this change in Museveni’s behaviour will continue in future visits, his actions in Kenya provide an interesting glimpse into how even the strictest leaders can bend their own rules when the occasion calls for it.
