Ssegirinya’s Mother Refuses to Endorse Daughter-in-Law to Succeed Late Son
Following the burial, in Kaddugala Butale in Masaka, of Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, the battle for the parliamentary seat he held has begun.
Ssegirinya’s family, led by his mother Justine Nakajumba Ssanyu, is seeking to influence who succeeds the former legislator.
Nakajumba and most of the family have announced they will support Alex Lusswa Luwemba, a close associate of Ssegirinya and his political assistant, to succeed ‘Mr Update.’
But Twayira Akandinda, one of Ssegirinya’s widows, says she is the right person to replace her late husband as MP for Kawempe North. Ssegirinya is survived by three widows and at least eight children, according to the family.
In supporting Alex Lusswa Luwemba, Nakajumba and her family argue that even when he is not a relative to Ssegirinya, Luwemba is not the right person to fulfil the promises that Ssegirinya had made to the Kawempe North constituents.
Nakajumba also argues that Luwemba was so close to Ssegirinya that he has deep knowledge of his businesses and other secrets such as those related to politics.
The family even broached the idea of the possibility of Luwemba converting to Islam if that is what is required for him to get the Muslim vote in Kawempe North.
But Twayira Akandinda said she, too, has the skills and knowledge needed to succeed Ssegirinya, since she had been close to him as wife and confidant.
Both Akandinda and Luwemba are expected to seek the blessing of main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine which has previously criticized the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) of President Museveni for making children of fallen politicians succeed their parents.
Meanwhile, Nakajumba and the family have also condemned politicians for the confusion at the burial of Ssegirinya in Masaka where two separate funeral proceedings were held.
While Ssegirinya’s mother praised Mathias Mpuuga, the fallen MP’s sister blasted Bobi Wine’s NUP after fight over the body. NUP foot soldiers had blocked police from taking the body to the Mpuuga event in a playground. (See Details Here and There).
