New Guidelines Set to End Traffic Bribery: What Drivers and Officers Need to Know

The Uganda Traffic Police shared new rules to make traffic stops more honest and professional. These rules, called Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), are meant to stop bribery and ensure fair treatment for drivers.

The police explained that drivers must stay seated in their vehicles when stopped by an officer. For medium and heavy buses, officers will now step inside the vehicle to check for any offences and to teach passengers about road safety.

The police also said that officers are no longer allowed to sit in an offender’s vehicle unless they are escorting the driver to a police station. This change is aimed at reducing any chance of bribery or misuse of power.

To make things more open, the police stated that all interactions between drivers and officers must happen in front of passengers. This ensures that everything is clear and fair for everyone involved.

For heavy goods vehicles, officers have been told to approach only the driver’s door.

The Uganda Traffic Police said these new rules are part of a larger plan to rebuild trust between the public and the police while improving safety on the roads. By focusing on fairness and professionalism, they hope to stop corruption during traffic stops.

The police have also set up a phone number for people to report any officers who break these rules. They asked the public to call 0773815326 if they see any misconduct or unprofessional behaviour by traffic officers. This number connects directly to the In-Charge Alert Squad, which handles discipline among traffic police.

The police urged both drivers and officers to follow these new rules so that they can work together for safer roads. Drivers were encouraged to cooperate with officers and report any problems, while officers were reminded to act professionally at all times.

These changes show Uganda’s commitment to ending bribery on the roads and creating a safer, fairer system for everyone. The police expressed hope that these steps would lead to better relationships between law enforcement and the public.
