"If Mpuuga Can’t Win Without NUP, He Should Rethink Contesting" – Gashumba Fires Ahead of 2026
Mathias Mpuuga’s political journey has taken a new turn after his fallout with the National Unity Platform (NUP).
As the 2026 General Elections approach, the big question remains: can Mpuuga win his parliamentary seat in Masaka without NUP's support?
Frank Gashumba, a well-known public figure, has openly challenged Mpuuga to prove his political strength.
Speaking during the Entugga program on Radio 4, Gashumba did not hold back.
“Mpuuga now needs to demonstrate to the country that he can return to Parliament without relying on a NUP ticket. If he is uncertain about winning in Masaka, he should reconsider contesting, as losing again would be an embarrassing moment for him,” he said.
Mpuuga, who is now affiliated with a new political party called the Democratic Alliance, faces a significant test.
His political career is under scrutiny, as many wonder if his influence can stand alone without the NUP's backing.
The National Unity Platform has been a strong force in Uganda’s politics, especially in regions like Masaka.
Losing its support means Mpuuga must find new ways to connect with the voters who once supported him under the NUP banner.
So far, Mpuuga seems determined to remain politically relevant. He has stayed active in advocating for governance changes and serving his constituents.
However, the challenge ahead is undeniable. Winning a parliamentary seat requires more than just visibility; it demands trust, connection, and unwavering grassroots support.
“Mpuuga must convince the people of Masaka that he is still their best choice. He needs to show that his work speaks louder than party politics,” Gashumba added.
Mpuuga's move to the Democratic Alliance might give him an alternative platform, but it’s unclear if the party has the strength to rival the NUP’s popularity in the region. The 2026 elections will be a crucial moment for him.
