The government of Uganda has addressed claims that Dr. Kizza Besigye, the head of the opposition, is not receiving enough food while incarcerated at Luzira Maximum Security Prison.
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Internal Affairs which oversees prisons, through the Minister of State for Internal Affairs, Gen David Muhoozi made it clear that only those approved by Besigye's family are allowed to send him meals.
Gen David Muhoozi, made the clarification following concerns raised in Parliament by Hon Ssemujju Nganda.
Hon. Ssemujju accused the government was accused of putting Besigye through cruel treatment, including limiting their access to food from outside sources and erecting a glass wall that forbids them from interacting physically.
Additionally, Hon. Ssemujju connected these actions to previous threats made by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defense Forces, who declared in public that Besigye would be put to death on Heroes' Day.
