MPs Left Nodding as Ssegona Grills AG Kiwanuka With Hard-Hitting Question Over Besigye’s Detention

There was a heated moment in Parliament when Hon. Medard Ssegona put a tough question to Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka about the continued detention of Dr. Kizza Besigye and others.

During the session, Ssegona asked: "My question to the Attorney General is; for the persons currently being held, under whose orders and with what valid warrants do they remain in prison?"

This question caught the attention of many MPs. Some, like Hon. Ssemujju Nganda, nodded their heads in agreement, showing their support for Ssegona’s argument.

Hon. Ssegona went on to point out that the warrant for releasing Besigye had already expired on Monday.

He insisted that even without orders from the Supreme Court, Besigye should have been set free. He also reminded the Attorney General that the Supreme Court had already ruled against trying civilians in military courts.

The matter of Besigye’s detention has been a big topic in Uganda, with many opposition leaders and activists accusing the government of using unfair means to silence political opponents. Dr. Kizza Besigye, a long-time government critic, has faced multiple arrests in the past.

Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka was expected to respond to Ssegona’s concerns, but as of now, there is still no clear answer regarding the legal basis for Besigye’s continued detention. The opposition, however, is determined to keep pushing for justice.

Many Ugandans are now waiting to see what happens next. Will the government respect the law and release Besigye, or will this become another long legal battle? Only time will tell.
