Luwemba Runs as Independent for Kawempe North By-election After NUP Ticket Denial, Mpuuga Backs Him

The political situation in Kawempe North is becoming tense as the by-election approaches. A debate over the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer has caused division within the party.

Muhammad Luwemba Luswa, a former aide to the late MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, was passed over for the NUP ticket in favour of lawyer Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi. This decision has caused frustration, particularly among grassroots supporters who believe Luwemba, with his close connection to Ssegirinya, would be a more suitable candidate.

In response, Luwemba has decided to run as an independent candidate, gaining the support of Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, the former deputy president for Buganda Region in NUP.

Luwemba's decision to contest as an independent has raised concerns within NUP, with fears of a split in the opposition vote.

However, Luwemba remains committed to upholding Ssegirinya’s legacy of service and accountability. "I cannot ignore the voices of the people," he said, promising to provide "authentic leadership that delivers tangible results."

Other candidates are also running in the by-election, including Faridah Nambi from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and musician Sadat Mukiibi (Kalifah AgaNaga), representing the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

As the campaign period from February 28 to March 11 unfolds, the March 13 vote will not only determine the next MP for Kawempe North but also test NUP's ability to resolve internal divisions and maintain party unity.
