Gen Otafiire: NUP MP Found with UPDF Ranks for Lt. Gen and Maj. Gen

As campaigns for the Kawempe North by-election continue, Uganda's political environment is becoming more tense. Security forces have arrested 24 opposition supporters, raising concerns about political repression and the use of military symbols.
Among those detained are Hon. Nyeko and Hon. Nkunyingi, both members of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
During the arrests, security forces recovered military rank insignia, including those for Lieutenant General and Major General, allegedly found with Hon. Nyeko. Other items seized include red overalls with NUP badges, a NUP red beret, and a shield.
The government says some of those arrested were in possession of military gear without authorisation, which could lead to legal action.
Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire, stated that the government is committed to a fair electoral process.
However, NUP supporters believe the arrests are meant to weaken the opposition and create fear among voters. This has increased tensions between the opposition and the government ahead of the by-election.
The government is now working to prevent the unauthorised use of military symbols. Plans are in place to publish a list of officially recognised military uniforms and insignia.
Minister Otafiire has also said that security forces will receive clear instructions on how to maintain order and that any reports of misconduct by officers will be investigated.
