Explosive Leaked Audios Explain Besigye’s Alleged Coup Plot Against M7, But Is It A Political Smear?

Uganda's political scene has been shaken by leaked audio recordings that allegedly link former opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye to a plot to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni’s government.
The audios, which are said to have been obtained by security agencies, have raised eyebrows across the country.
But with questions surrounding their authenticity, many are left wondering whether these are just part of a political smear.
The recordings reportedly show Besigye discussing plans to acquire weapons and seek foreign support for a rebellion.
One of the audios features a voice believed to be Besigye’s, claiming that divisions within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) could work to their advantage in a potential coup.
The voice also talks about using counterfeit money to destabilize the economy and weaken Museveni’s grip on power.
In addition to the alleged plans for rebellion, the audios also include criticisms of fellow opposition leader Bobi Wine.
The speaker in the tapes dismisses Bobi Wine’s approach to opposition politics, saying it is not effective.
“We need action, not empty slogans,” the voice states.
The timing of these leaked recordings has raised suspicions.
They were released just as Uganda is gearing up for the 2026 general elections, and some political analysts believe the audios may be a tactic to discredit Besigye and weaken his support base.
"We’ve seen this before—arrest, accuse, and discredit. It’s all politics," said Sarah Mugisha, a political analyst in Kampala.
Besigye, who was arrested in Nairobi in November 2024, has denied the accusations against him.
He and his associate, Haji Obeid Lutale, were charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, although they both argued that they were civilians and should not be tried in a military court.
Besigye’s supporters have defended him, calling the claims baseless and part of a larger effort to silence his voice in Uganda’s politics.
“This is just another attempt to discredit him,” one of his supporters said.
