UPDF Returns from Somalia: What’s Next?

The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) recently concluded a post-mission ideological course for Battle Group 40 (BG 40) and United Nations Guard Unit X (UNGU X) at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre (IPSO-CT) in Singo.

This training followed their 12-month deployment in Somalia, marking a transition back to regular service. The ceremony was presided over by Brigadier General Michael Kabango, Chief of Staff - Land Forces, representing Deputy Commander Land Forces Major General Francis Takirwa.

Brig. Gen. Kabango lauded the troops for their resilience and professionalism during the mission. He emphasized that the event was not merely a course closure but a recognition of their sacrifices and achievements.

He urged the soldiers to uphold discipline, patriotism, and financial prudence as they reintegrate into regular duties. The training aimed to reinforce these values, ensuring readiness for future assignments.

Brigadier General Patrick Otongo, Commandant of IPSO-CT, highlighted the soldiers' exceptional performance, attributing it to effective training. This underscores the importance of comprehensive preparation for mission success.

Commanders of BG 40 and UNGU X, Colonel Topher Magino and Lieutenant Colonel David Emmanuel Odongo, respectively, praised their troops for maintaining discipline and ensuring mission success.

They encouraged their teams to continue exhibiting professionalism during reintegration, reflecting the high standards set during deployment. Such conduct is vital for maintaining the UPDF's esteemed reputation.

The ceremony was attended by senior commanders, officers from both battlegroups, and community leaders, signifying collective appreciation for the soldiers' dedication.

Uganda was the first country to deploy soldiers to Somalia in March 2007, spearheading the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to combat al-Shabaab insurgents and protect the internationally-backed government in Mogadishu.

The UPDF's continued commitment to peacekeeping operations in Somalia reflects Uganda's dedication to regional stability and security. Their efforts have significantly contributed to the progress observed in the region.
