Landslide Victory for NUP's Elias Nalukoola as He Defeats NRM Candidate With a Big Margin

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has cemented its dominance in Kawempe North after its candidate, Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi, won the parliamentary by-election held on March 13, 2025.
According to the Kampala District Returning Officer, Mr. Wakabayi Henry, Nalukoola secured 17,764 votes, comfortably defeating his closest competitor, Faridah Nambi of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), who garnered 8,593 votes.
This by-election was necessitated by the unfortunate passing of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya in January.
Ssegirinya, who had held the seat since 2021 under the NUP ticket, was a popular figure in the constituency, and his party was keen on retaining the position.
The election took place across nine wards and 197 polling stations, with voter turnout reflecting growing political engagement in the area.
The number of registered voters had increased from 164,052 in 2021 to 199,341 in 2025, showing a rise in electoral participation.
Nalukoola, a lawyer and former Democratic Party (DP) legal advisor, ran on a platform of continuing Ssegirinya’s work and addressing the needs of Kawempe North residents.
The peaceful conduct of the election has been praised, with officials and observers noting the transparency of the process.
With this victory, NUP strengthens its grip on Kampala politics, sending a strong message ahead of future electoral contests.
