Ugandan lawyer Eron Kiiza has received a much-needed boost in his legal battle after a senior advocate stepped in to defend him, bringing a new twist to his case.

The case of detained Ugandan lawyer Eron Kiiza has taken a significant turn after the East Africa Law Society (EALS) condemned his prolonged detention and demanded his immediate release.

The legal fraternity has rallied behind Kiiza, highlighting serious concerns over human rights violations and judicial integrity.

Kiiza was arrested on January 2, 2025, at the General Court Martial while representing opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his associate Hajj Obeid Utale Kamulegeya.

He was sentenced to nine months in prison for contempt of court after challenging directives from military officers.

His case has sparked regional and international outrage, especially after the Ugandan Supreme Court ruled on January 31 that military courts have no jurisdiction over civilians. Despite this ruling, Kiiza has remained in detention.

His legal team has been actively pursuing his release, filing a habeas corpus application in the High Court, which was dismissed.

A new attempt to secure his bail has been scheduled for April 4, offering renewed hope for justice.

The EALS, led by President Ramadhan Abubakar, has strongly condemned Kiiza’s incarceration, describing it as an attack on the legal profession and the rule of law.

A team from the regional bar visited Kiiza in Kitalya Prison, confirming allegations of torture and poor health conditions.

Legal experts insist that Uganda must comply with international human rights obligations and release Kiiza immediately.
