The Village Boy Who Rose to Guard Uganda's Money: Meet Michael Atingi-Ego and Why M7 Appointed Him

President Museveni named Michael Atingi-Ego as Bank of Uganda Governor yesterday. "We trust his leadership will strengthen our financial systems," Museveni said during the announcement.

Michael Atingi-Ego grew up herding cattle in rural Tororo district. His early mornings started with walking to the village school barefoot.

The newly appointed governor earned his first degree from Makerere University. He later completed his doctorate at Liverpool University in the United Kingdom.

His career began as a junior economist at Bank of Uganda. He steadily climbed through various positions at the central bank.

The International Monetary Fund recruited him as their senior economist. He served there for fifteen years, handling major African economic programs.

He returned home as Deputy Governor in 2020. His leadership helped stabilize Uganda's economy during Covid-19 challenges.

Professor Augustus Nuwagaba joins him as Deputy Governor. The two will lead Uganda's monetary policy implementation together.

The 58-year-old takes over from his predecessor next month. His first task focuses on controlling inflation rates.

"My village upbringing taught me the value of every shilling," Atingi-Ego said. His eyes sparkled as he remembered his humble beginnings.

The central bank welcomed its new leadership yesterday. Staff gathered at the headquarters for the official announcement.
