Bishop Bukomeko Mourns Pope Francis, Urges Christians to Draw Strength from the Resurrection

Kiyinda-Mityana Anglican Bishop James Bukomeko has extended heartfelt condolences to the Roman Catholic Church following the death of Pope Francis, praising the late pontiff as a global spiritual father, peace advocate, and tireless humanitarian.

“We have lost a spiritual father. Pope Francis has been a beacon of unity in matters of faith,” Bishop Bukomeko said in a statement delivered after Easter, a time he called spiritually significant for such a loss.

Bukomeko hailed the Pope’s global influence as a moral guide and peacemaker, recalling his repeated efforts to mediate conflict and his compassion for those in crisis.

“We have seen him time and again stepping in to mediate between conflicting parties and offering guidance rooted in compassion and wisdom. His voice brought calm in times of turmoil. We are truly going to miss him,” he said.

He also acknowledged Pope Francis’s care for marginalised and suffering communities.

“He has been close to suffering communities. He offered support to the vulnerable and reached out to those affected by disasters and crises. His service to the world will not be forgotten.”

Reflecting on the timing of the Pope’s death during Easter, Bishop Bukomeko encouraged Christians to find strength in the resurrection of Christ.

“It is not by coincidence that God has called him at such a time. As we celebrate Easter—the resurrection of our Lord—we are reminded that fear must not overcome us,” he said.

“Jesus rose from the dead to give us hope. So even in this moment of grief, we must find courage.”

He urged believers to meditate on the meaning of Christ’s resurrection.

“Let us think deeply about what Jesus did for us when He died and rose again. His resurrection is a victory over death, and it gives us strength to carry on.”

Bishop Bukomeko concluded with a call for unity and faith: “May God strengthen you and give you peace. Trust in the Word of Jesus Christ. Let us remain strong and united in faith, just as Pope Francis taught us by example.”
