Mityana Leaders Lash Out at EC Over Election Preparations

Tensions are boiling over in Mityana District as leaders and voters slam the Electoral Commission for failing to deliver voter registers, just months before Uganda heads to the 2026 general elections.
Leaders accuse the Commission of rushing to roll out electoral activities without putting proper systems in place, warning that the chaos threatens the credibility of the entire election.
"You cannot call people to participate in a process you are not ready for. This level of negligence signals that the 2026 election is already facing serious risks. The Electoral Commission must stop playing with the people's right to a free and fair vote," said Fred Wotonava, Mayor of Central Division in Mityana Municipality.
Frustration has only deepened, with some leaders accusing the Commission of deliberately frustrating the electoral process instead of safeguarding it.
Francis Zaake, Member of Parliament for Mityana Municipality, warned that public trust was hanging by a thread.
"Deliberate or not, these delays are undermining public trust in the electoral process. We are closely monitoring every step. The people of Mityana deserve better, and we will not sit back while their rights are being tampered with," Zaake said.
The crisis intensified after it emerged that 370 polling stations in Mityana still have no voter registers—a situation leaders say could wreak havoc on voter verification and election day logistics.
"When critical materials like registers are missing this close to elections, you know something is seriously wrong," Wotonava added.
"The Electoral Commission must explain itself, not with excuses, but with real action."
Facing mounting pressure, Mityana District Electoral Officer Komuhangi Alex admitted there were serious challenges but urged voters to remain calm.
"We recognise the frustrations on the ground, but I encourage the people of Mityana to remain calm and hopeful. We are working around the clock to address these issues and ensure everyone is ready for the elections," Komuhangi said.
But with each passing day, confidence in the Commission's readiness is draining away.
In Mityana, once a quiet district, the election storm is already gathering—and many fear it could be a sign of bigger trouble ahead for Uganda’s 2026 elections.
