Heavy Security Deployed at NUP Headquarters in Kampala as Press Conference Begins Has Sparked Debate

On the morning of May 21, 2025, a heavy security presence was witnessed around the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters in Kampala, Uganda.The opposition party had called for a major press conference, attracting the attention of security agencies.

Several Toyota Hiace vans, commonly referred to as “drones” by Ugandans, were seen parked around the NUP offices.

These vans were carrying armed military officers and masked security operatives.

Their presence created tension among party members and passersby.

Some locals said it felt like a planned operation rather than ordinary security.

The NUP is the leading opposition party in Uganda.

Its leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has been vocal against the government.

The party regularly raises concerns about human rights, democracy, and election reforms.

This press conference was expected to address some of these issues.

Although no clashes were reported, the mood around the area remained tense.

People entering or leaving the NUP headquarters were closely monitored by the security personnel.

Some party members claimed that the security presence was meant to intimidate and send a message to the opposition.

“We have a constitutional right to speak and gather.

The heavy deployment is unnecessary and a sign of fear from those in power,” one NUP official said during the event.

Despite the tight security, the press conference went on as planned.

Party leaders used the opportunity to speak against the continued harassment of opposition voices in Uganda.

They also called on the international community to pay attention to what they described as growing political repression.

So far, the Ugandan government and security agencies have not given an official reason for the deployment of the vans and officers.

However, such operations have been seen before during political activities involving the opposition.
