PAKWACH DISTRICT, Uganda – A tragic head-on collision occurred on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Payila Alwi, Pakwach District, claiming one life and leaving several others seriously injured. The incident involved a fuel tanker and a Baby Coach bus.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened around 9:30 PM at Alwi Payila trading center. The fuel tanker, driven by Isaac Adam Omar, collided with the Baby Coach bus, which was traveling from Kampala to Paidha. Tragically, Omar died on the spot. His body has been transported to Pakwach Health IV mortuary for postmortem examination.

Mr. Collins Asea, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He stated that seriously injured passengers were rushed to Pakwach Health IV for medical attention. However, the exact cause of the accident and the total number of passengers on board the bus were not immediately disclosed.

Asea emphasized the police’s ongoing efforts to sensitize road users about traffic precautions, stressing the importance of respecting other road users and adhering to traffic regulations for safety.

An eyewitness, Alfred Okechmungu, described the incident as “unfortunate,” stating that the fuel tanker driver failed to give way to the bus. He commended community members near the accident scene for their quick response in rescuing injured victims trapped in the bus.

In response to the incident, Mr. Robert Odia, the LC III Chairperson of Alwi Sub-county, appealed to the government to consider upgrading Alwi Health III to Health IV.

He argued that having a higher-level health center along the highway would significantly improve the response to emergency cases like accidents, reducing the need for victims to travel long distances for critical medical attention
