Lyantondo Hosts Prayers Ahead of Heroes Day Celebrations

As Uganda prepares to mark the 2025 Heroes Day, the district of Lyantonde came alive with emotion and reverence during a special prayer gathering held at Kaliiro Technical Institute on Friday.
The prayers, organized to honor the memory and sacrifices of Uganda’s fallen heroes, brought together religious leaders, government officials, war veterans, and residents from across the region.
Leading the prayers was Bishop Serverus Jumba, who urged Ugandans to not only remember the country’s heroes but also emulate their selflessness and patriotism.
"Our heroes gave their lives and comfort for the peace we enjoy today. Let us honor them not only through prayer but by living responsibly and serving our country diligently," said Bishop Jumba.
The prayers were officiated by Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, the Minister for Security, who praised the people of Lyantonde for their hospitality and patriotism.
"This is a significant moment for all Ugandans. As we remember those who brought us peace, we must also commit ourselves to protecting that peace and ensuring Uganda continues to prosper," said Maj. Gen. Muhwezi.
Among the dignitaries in attendance was former Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura, and Minister for Luwero Triangle, Alice Karamuzi Kaboyo.
During the event, war veterans, led by Lt. Fred Kalema, voiced their concerns over delayed and insufficient pension payments.
"We are grateful for the recognition, but we appeal to the government to increase our pensions to reflect today’s cost of living. Many of our colleagues are struggling to survive," Lt. Kalema said passionately.
Lyantonde District Woman MP, Pauline Kemirembe, expressed her excitement and gratitude for her district being chosen to host the upcoming national celebrations.
"We thank His Excellency the President and the entire Cabinet for granting us this honor. Lyantonde is ready to host the country and celebrate the lives of our national heroes in 2025," she said.
District Vice Chairperson, Ms. Jane Francis Nakasi, praised the government for fulfilling part of its promises but also took the opportunity to highlight the district’s challenges.
"We acknowledge the government's efforts, especially in infrastructure and support to veterans, but we still face serious gaps in health and education staffing. We request urgent attention to these areas," said Nakasi.
The National Heroes Day celebrations, held annually on June 9, are aimed at recognizing individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to Uganda’s struggle for freedom and national development.
Lyantonde is gearing up to host the official 2025 commemorations, a role that local leaders and residents have warmly welcomed.
