MPs Divided Over Sectoral Committee Leadership Changes in Last Session of 11th Parliament

A group of legislators has requested that Parliament leadership and party whips defer the consideration of sectoral committee leadership changes in the current session of the 11th Parliament.

With MPs juggling parliamentary duties and campaign activities ahead of upcoming elections, the legislators argue that changes to committee leadership would create unnecessary disruptions.

The 11th Parliament has entered its last session, with Speaker Anita Among emphasizing the institution's commitment to prioritizing government business.

However, this session comes at a critical time, as most MPs are balancing their legislative duties with campaign activities, seeking to renew their mandates with voters.

"Given the competing demands on our time, only critical business can be effectively handled during this period," said MP Baka.

With the looming elections, MPs are finding it challenging to balance their parliamentary work with campaign activities.

Some MPs are urging Parliament leadership and party whips to defer changes to sectoral committee leadership, citing the potential for unnecessary disruptions at a time when stability and continuity are crucial.

"Changing leadership at this time would cause disruption in processing business," said MP Angura. "We need stability and continuity to ensure that critical business is processed."

However, not all MPs agree with this proposal. MP Eddie Kwizera opposes deferring the current leadership, arguing that the rules governing Parliament's operations are clear and should not be altered to accommodate the current circumstances.

"The rules are clear, and we should adhere to them," Kwizera said. "Some committees have underperformed, and a change in leadership is necessary to ensure effectiveness."

Kwizera cited the underperformance of some sectoral committees as a reason for the need for change. "Some committees have not performed well, and it's time for a change," he said.

The debate over sectoral committee leadership changes highlights the complexities of managing Parliament's business during a critical period.
