Uganda Reschedules This Year's World Environment Day to June 25

Uganda has officially pushed the national celebration of World Environment Day (WED) 2025 from its global date of June 5 to 25, 2025.
This announcement came through a public notice issued by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), which cited a scheduling conflict with the State of the Nation Address.
According to a statement by Dr. Barirega Akankwasah, Executive Director of NEMA and Chairperson of the National Organising Committee, the change was necessary because the annual presidential address—set for June 5th—requires the attendance of all key dignitaries, many of whom are integral to the WED commemorations.
“The national commemoration for WED 2025… will now take place on Wednesday, June 25, 2025,” the notice reads.
“This adjustment ensures full participation from stakeholders while respecting national obligations.”
Despite the date change, the theme "United Against Plastic Pollution" remains intact, reflecting Uganda’s deepening commitment to tackling plastic waste and promoting environmental justice.
The venue also remains unchanged—Kigezi High School Primary Playground in Kabale District.
This year’s celebration is expected to highlight Uganda’s 30-year journey in environmental management and offer a powerful call to action to phase out single-use plastics, a major threat to ecosystems and public health.
Environmentalists and civil society groups have cautiously welcomed the shift, urging NEMA to use the extra time to deepen grassroots mobilization and push for policy reform.
"Plastic pollution is a pandemic on its own," said one climate activist. "We hope this change gives organizers time to turn awareness into action."
Uganda’s WED 2025 promises to be more than a ceremonial day—it’s a pivotal moment in the country’s green movement.
