India Orders Extra Checks on Air India’s Boeing 787 Fleet After Crash

India’s aviation regulator has ordered immediate safety checks on Air India’s Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft, following Thursday’s fatal crash of a London-bound flight in Ahmedabad that claimed 241 lives.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced that beginning 15 June, mandatory one-off checks will be conducted before international departures.

These include inspections of the electronic engine control systems and cabin air compressors. Additional in-transit flight control inspections will also be introduced and remain in place until further notice.

Power assurance checks on the affected fleet are to be completed within two weeks.

The move comes as investigators confirm the recovery of one of the aircraft’s black boxes, which are crucial to understanding what happened in the final moments before the crash.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the crash site and met survivors at a local hospital.
