Tension is brewing within Uganda’s religious circles following a strong-worded caution issued by renowned Catholic cleric, Father Deogratias Kiibi Kateregga, directed at prominent Muslim scholar Sheikh Kiti.

In a message that has since sparked heated debate across various platforms, Father Kiibi publicly told Sheikh Kiti to “stay in his lane,” warning him against attacking matters he allegedly doesn’t comprehend.

“Dear Sheikh Kiti, life is short. Stop attacking what you don’t understand,” Father Kiibi wrote, a statement many believe was triggered by recent comments from Sheikh Kiti perceived to be critical of Christian doctrine and clerical practices.

Although the exact remarks that provoked the warning were not explicitly quoted, insiders suggest that Sheikh Kiti had made a series of media statements questioning the moral authority of certain Christian leaders and commenting critically on issues beyond the Muslim community.

Father Kiibi, known for his unfiltered sermons and national influence, did not mince words. His response has since fueled sharp reactions, with some religious leaders calling for restraint and mutual respect among clerics of different faiths.

Others, however, have applauded Father Kiibi’s boldness, accusing Sheikh Kiti of persistently undermining other religious groups under the guise of religious debate.

This is not the first time both men have found themselves at odds over public commentary, though tensions have rarely escalated to this level.

Religious leaders across the country have been urged to promote unity and tolerance amid the rising cross-denominational tensions.

Meanwhile, the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda has reportedly scheduled a private dialogue aimed at de-escalating the situation and fostering mutual respect between clerics of different faiths
