Kayunga District witnessed a rare convergence of Uganda’s top opposition leaders on Saturday as they joined mourners to pay final respects to Hajji Ali Ssenkungu, the father of Kampala Woman MP, Hon. Shamim Malende.

The burial, held at the family’s ancestral home, drew national attention as prominent National Unity Platform (NUP) figures including party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, and Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi made their way to the village in a heavily followed convoy.

Arrival of the opposition heavyweights stirred emotional scenes among locals, with many lining the roadside to catch a glimpse of the leaders.

The atmosphere remained tense but calm, with plainclothes and uniformed officers stationed at key points throughout the ceremony.

Hajji Ssenkungu, remembered as a principled and God-fearing man, was honored by religious and community leaders for his upright legacy.

Muslim clerics led the burial prayers in accordance with Islamic rites, emphasizing unity, compassion, and resilience in the face of loss.

Speeches remained largely apolitical, with leaders choosing solemn tones over rhetoric. Bobi Wine, speaking briefly, extended condolences to the family, urging strength during this trying moment.

Hon. Malende, surrounded by relatives and close allies, fought back tears as her father was lowered to rest.

Despite the public attention, the burial proceeded without incident. Security personnel maintained a visible but non-intrusive presence throughout the day.

By evening, the village had returned to its quiet rhythm, but for many residents, the event marked not only the end of a life but a significant moment of solidarity within Uganda’s political opposition
