In a recent media interview that has sparked widespread debate across Uganda and beyond, Bebe Cool, one of Uganda’s most prominent artists, voiced strong support for polygamy, declaring that marrying multiple women is not only acceptable but culturally justified.

Speaking from Kampala, the singer argued that African traditions have long embraced polygamous unions and that modern society should not demonise men who choose to practise it.

The “Love You Everyday” hitmaker stated that a man with the financial and emotional capacity to care for more than one wife should not be criticised. He further suggested that Western ideals of monogamy are being unfairly imposed on African societies, leading to social confusion and family instability.

His views have since sparked heated conversations online, with supporters praising his boldness while critics accuse him of promoting outdated gender norms.

Women’s rights advocates have strongly condemned the remarks, arguing that such statements reinforce patriarchy and undermine the fight for gender equality. Religious leaders have also weighed in, with mixed reactions depending on denomination and doctrine.

Despite the backlash, Bebe Cool has remained unapologetic, insisting that polygamy, when practised responsibly, should be normalised.

His remarks have reignited discussions around cultural identity, marriage expectations, and the evolving definitions of love and commitment in Uganda’s modern society.

The debate continues to unfold on radio stations, social media platforms, and family dinner tables alike
