MITYANA- Mityana District Woman Member of Parliament, Joyce Bagala Ntwatwa, has distributed 10,000 chickens that are one month old to women across 17 sub-counties, including Maanyi, Malangala, Ssekanyonyi, Namungo, Busimbi, and others.

The poultry distribution initiative, warmly welcomed by hundreds of beneficiaries, is aimed at uplifting women many of whom serve as the primary breadwinners in their households through income-generating activities rooted in agriculture.

“Today’s woman is not just a caretaker; she’s a provider, a planner, and an entrepreneur,”Bagala noted.“By supporting poultry farming, we are offering women a reliable path to financial independence, improved nutrition, and stronger families.”

She explained that chickens, while small in size, hold enormous potential when it comes to rural income generation. They provide daily yields through eggs, can be sold for meat, and are easy to manage, even in resource-limited settings.

“Poultry is not just a business it’s a doorway to dignity and self-reliance,” Bagala added.

The beneficiaries, drawn from all corners of the district, expressed heartfelt appreciation to their MP for recognising their potential and investing in their livelihoods.

“With these chickens, I can start a poultry project right in my backyard,” said Jane Nakasinde, a beneficiary from Busimbi Sub-county. “This will help me feed my family, pay school fees for my children, and stop depending on handouts.”

Many women noted that with the rising cost of living and limited employment opportunities, this initiative provides a timely opportunity to engage in sustainable farming practices from home.

The poultry initiative is part of Bagala’s wider development agenda, which focuses on grassroots empowerment through agriculture, vocational skills, and support for vulnerable groups such as youth, elderly persons, and single mothers.

“This is just the beginning,” Bagala said. “We are committed to rolling out more community-based projects that address the real challenges our people face starting from their homes and extending to the district level.”

She emphasised that such programs not only promote household incomes but also contribute to the district’s economic recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely affected livelihoods, particularly in rural communities.

The initiative was lauded by district leaders, who described it as a practical solution to economic challenges facing women in rural areas.

Annie Miriam Nassali, the Vice Chairperson (LC5) of Mityana District, praised the effort. “This intervention is timely and well thought out.

It aligns with our development goals of empowering families from the ground up. We call on more leaders to emulate Bagala’s people-first approach.”Nassali noted.

With proper care and support, the 10,000 chickens are expected to multiply, creating a ripple effect that will benefit entire communities not just economically, but socially as well.

This initiative reaffirms that political leadership, when combined with a clear vision and action-oriented programs, can truly transform lives at the grassroots.
