President Yoweri Museveni has paid glowing tribute to First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni for her resilience and devotion during Uganda’s liberation struggle, highlighting her role as a single parent during the most turbulent years of their life.

Speaking on Sunday at Migyera UWESO Secondary School in Nakasongola during Maama Janet’s 77th birthday celebration, Museveni reflected on the sacrifices she made for the family and country.

“From 1971 to 1979, I was with her although I would go and come back, but I was around and providing for the family. But from 1981 to 1986, she was alone with the children in Nairobi and Sweden. So, I thank her for being a magnificent single parent," Museveni said.

The President, who led the National Resistance Army (NRA) in a five-year armed struggle that brought him to power in 1986, said Janet’s unwavering strength during his absence was vital not only for their family’s survival but for the success of the liberation cause.

The celebration was attended by family members, government officials, school staff and students.

Janet Museveni, who serves as Minister of Education and Sports, was visibly moved as her husband spoke.

The occasion was marked by prayers, music, and a sense of deep appreciation for her lifelong service, both to her family and to the nation
