The resident district commissioner (RDC) of Koboko, Emmy Mitala, has banned all political campaign activities in or near schools, health centres, and markets, citing concerns over public safety and disruption of essential services.

Mitala, who also serves as the regional whip for RDCs in West Nile, said the directive is intended to protect learners, patients, health workers, and vendors from potential violence and noise pollution associated with political gatherings.

He said political campaigns must not interfere with the core functions of schools, health centres, or marketplaces, and the safety and well-being of the public is a top priority.

Mitala also noted that the district security committee will soon meet with all candidates to issue detailed guidelines on how to conduct peaceful and orderly campaigns. The decision comes amid rising political tension in Koboko district and municipality ahead of the NRM primary elections, with various camps reportedly forming vigilante groups to control and mobilize supporters.

Security agencies say these developments have already raised tensions among rival candidates and their followers. Dr Charles Ayume, the incumbent MP for Koboko Municipality, who is seeking re-election, supported the call for peaceful campaigns, urging fellow candidates to focus on policy issues that matter to the electorate rather than inciting violence.

Ayume said the campaigns can remain peaceful if all key players stick to issues affecting the people. As NRM primary campaigns intensify across urban centres, municipalities, and cities, especially in areas with multiple contenders, security and electoral officials are urging all participants to prioritise peaceful engagement and respect for public institutions
