The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has announced a planned power outage across parts of Central Uganda on Saturday, July 5, 2025, to allow for critical maintenance and upgrade works by the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL).

The blackout will last from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will affect large swathes of Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, and Mpigi districts. According to UEDCL, the shutdown is necessary to facilitate “critical system improvement and line maintenance works” aimed at enhancing grid reliability, safety, and efficiency.

In a public notice dated July 3, Jonan Kiiza, Head of Corporate and Stakeholder Affairs at UEDCL, said the maintenance is part of a broader effort to modernize the national electricity infrastructure.

“The planned works are part of ongoing efforts to stabilize and improve the power supply network. We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers,” he said.

Power will be switched off in areas connected to the Namanve North and Mutundwe substations, which serve both residential and industrial zones.

In Kampala and Wakiso, areas affected include Kyaliwajjala, Nalya Estate, Kiwatule, Bulindo, Nsawo, Kitikifumba, Buwaate, Kiira, Kimbejja, Kiwologoma, and Nsasa.

In Mukono District, power will go off in Seeta, Sonde, Kiwanga, Bukerere, Misindye, Nakagere, Jomayi Estate, Kigunga, and Jinja Misindye.

Communities around Gayaza, including Manyangwa, Kabubu, Kyetume, Gayaza Junior School, and the Kiwala Sugar Plantation, will also experience the blackout.

In the western Kampala metropolitan zone, affected areas include Nateete, Busega, Bulenga, Buloba Town Council, Buyala, and parts of Kiseka Road.

The outage extends further west into Mpigi District, impacting Nabbingo, Maya, Nsangi, Katende, Kamengo, Mpambire, Kyabadaaza, and Kibuga Town Council.

UEDCL urged customers to plan ahead and exercise caution during the outage.

“We understand the impact such interruptions can cause, and we appreciate the public’s patience as we work to ensure a more resilient power network,” the company said in its statement.

The utility also encouraged the public to treat all power lines as live during the outage period and to report any hazards or unusual occurrences through official customer service lines.
