KAMPALA, Uganda — Justice Professor Dr. George W. Kanyeihamba, a leading figure in Ugandan constitutional and human rights law, has died. A family member confirmed his passing, promising to release more details soon.
Kanyeihamba’s extensive career spanned national and international stages. Domestically, he served as a Cabinet Minister, a Member of Parliament, and a Justice of the Supreme Court. Notably, he chaired the Legal Committee of the Constituent Assembly responsible for drafting Uganda’s 1995 Constitution.
Internationally, Justice Kanyeihamba was a legal expert involved in the revision of the African Charter of Human and Peoples’ Rights. He participated in numerous fact-finding missions for organizations such as the Commonwealth Secretariat and the International Commission of Jurists in countries including Kenya and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). In 2006, he was elected a Judge of the African Court of Justice/Human and Peoples’ Rights and became a Member of the International Criminal Bar Association council.
