Rebellion in Museveni’s Cabinet? Betty Amongi Rumored to Defy NRM After Brutal Defeat

Speculation is rife in Uganda’s political circles after Minister Betty Amongi, a prominent figure in President Yoweri Museveni’s NRM government, suffered a surprising setback in the recently concluded NRM party primaries.Betty Amongi, who currently serves as Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, failed to secure the party’s flag, raising questions about her next political move.
A post making rounds online has sparked debate, suggesting that Amongi may opt to run as an independent candidate, possibly against another serving minister from the same NRM government.
“Does this mean Betty Among, a Minister in the President Yoweri Museveni’s government is gonna run as an independent against a fellow minister in the @NRMOnline government?” Anthony Natif said.
Although Betty Amongi has not officially declared her intention to contest as an independent, her close allies have hinted at dissatisfaction with the primary process, alleging irregularities and internal sabotage.
Sources indicate she may be weighing her options, including defying the party position and returning to the race on an independent ticket.
If she chooses this path, it will not only deepen internal divisions within the ruling party but also present a curious political battle between two government ministers vying for the same parliamentary seat.
The NRM has previously warned that any members who lose in the primaries and contest as independents will face expulsion from the party.
Political analysts say this unfolding scenario could set a dangerous precedent, undermining party unity and discipline
